Balers improve hospitality at luxury hotels

08 janurary 2018

Rather than handling waste, staff can concentrate on ensuring top-notch hospitality.

An X10 baler from Bramidan enables Montreal-based luxury hotels, Le Crystal and St. Sulpice, to improve the management of recyclable waste and at the same time reduce their waste handling costs.

Luxury hotel in central Montreal

The hotel, Le Crystal, is situated in the heart of the city center of Montreal on the corner of the two streets La Montagne and Boulevard René Lévesque – a major traffic artery in the Québécois metropolis.

The luxurious boutique hotel has 131 suites, indoor swimming pool, a rooftop hot tub, a Swedish sauna, a fitness center, a renowned laurentian bistro, a bar, and event space.

Driven by a constant desire to provide very high quality services to their clientele, the owner and manager of Le Crystal wanted a solution that makes it possible to simplify and optimize the management of recyclable waste at the hotel premises.

Recyclable waste such as cardboard and plastic was stored in outside bins and collected in bulk several times a week.

Installing a Bramidan baler

The hotel management chose to install a Bramidan X10 bale press to compact their recyclable materials. The baler is easy to use, takes up very little space, and uses a standard 110-volt electric outlet. This makes it very suitable for hotels and restaurants with narrow backyards.

Drastic reduction in collections

Compacting recyclable materials has proved to have significant advantages. In addition to saving valuable time for staff and freeing up floor space for a cleaner work environment, the hotel has also experienced reduced costs for waste collections, while the noise annoyance associated with the passage of the waste collection trucks is minimized.

The new waste management system has reduced the number of waste collections by 75 pct.

A green key solution

The investment in the baler supports Le Crystal’s eco-responsible commitment. The hotel is a member of the Green Key initiative – a voluntary eco-label for hospitality businesses that are committed to adhere to the strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Being a Green Key member means that the hotel has taken important steps to protect the environment. This includes implementing solid environmental programs, better management methods, training programs and technical solutions to protect the environment and the local community.

Award winning eco initiatives

As a result of their many active initiatives, the hotel received the 2016 Hotelia award for their eco responsibilities.

Successful waste solution duplicated

Satisfied with his investment in the X10 baler, the manager of Le Crystal decided to duplicate the success and install another Bramidan X10 baler at one of his other hotels, Hotel St. Sulpice, situated in Old Montreal.
